From the earliest times, people utilized different painting means. In Ancient Greece, for example, it was 'stylus': a stick applied for writing and painting. By the way, the modern word 'style' comes from 'stylus'.

The main principle under which type of painting means is identified is the way the pigment is suspended or incorporated. Still, the technical characteristics of the surface determine the choice of painting means. The main of these parameters are tenacity, blendability and dissolubility.
